ETEP 2 Day Run!

Had a great 2 day run with the new ETEPS from USM! I have to say it's refreshing to teach people that are willing to absorb new material. 21st Century strategies are more intuitive to the new generation of teachers because of the skill set they possess and I saw that today.

One of my concern's is the frustration level one may encounter on an educational network. Most people experience a very fast connection at home. A school network is a totally different experience. I would recommend teachers make a plan B. If your lesson completely depends on the internet, print out your internet pages for each student to view, or take a screen shot of each page so you can talk your way through it on an LCD projector.

I have experienced the net connection completely down while presenting at a State Conference and THANKFULLY was prepared to deal with the situation by printing the material in an outline form and providing the link for later access.

Just like the Boy Scouts of America, your motto should be .... "Be Prepared." Plan B is Vital!

Great fun with the ETEPS. They are a coooooooooool bunch of FOLKS!

Set up a free web filtering system....

The entire process of setting up OpenDNS content filtering on my in-laws network this afternoon took less than ten minutes to complete. Our steps were:

1. I used the OpenDNS website to set the DNS numbers for their network router/WiFi access point to use OpenDNS numbers. The router then had to be restarted. (By putting these settings on the router, then their computers as well as any laptops/wireless devices we bring over to the house automatically have the same content filtering protection.)
2. We created a free OpenDNS account for my in-laws. We selected the types of content to filter. There are LOTS of choices, and we didn’t want to get carried away, but we did want basic protection. We selected the lowest level of filtering which protects against phishing attacks, and added filtering for pornography, nudity, and “tasteless” websites.
3. We waited three minutes for the settings to propagate to the OpenDNS nameservers.

I can write a long blog post that you will politely read and maybe make a brief comment on. Hey, Thanks Terri Dawson! Or, I can add multimedia to my blog to engage you & the students with the content I want you & them to learn and reflect on. Either way they are becoming involved in conversations they may not have had or heard without this technology tool to engage them. Why not make it fun to learn by meeting them on their terms. Which means to me... Bombarding them with simultaneous text, images, and video! They are after all “Screenagers!”

With that Said....
I sat down one day and thought how can I be a better teacher? I started by asking myself what kind of a learner am I and proceeded to visually sketch out my learning network using webspiration. I quickly realized I was a technoholic! On the flipside, I realized I teach the way I learn, which allows me to be a more persuasive and effective presenter. Teaching = Learning for me, which in turn, I hope leads to better learning for the people I teach. A New Year!

Reflecting back on 2008, it was an incredible year of change not only for me, but for everything around me. Life seems to work in 10 yr cycles - at least for me. I drive along and all of a sudden I come to a rotary that I circle a few times till I decide which way is best. At this point, I am still circling but think I have an idea which exit to take!
Learning = Change and change is somewhat uncomfortable for me but welcomed.

When you find something really great (and free) you just have to share it! Within our Sebago Alliance Tech Integrators meeting yesterday we were developing an online moodle class for our districts to participate in a professional development opportunity. One of the Integrators asked if we had ever heard of GeoGebra? Sounded very Mathy to me, and I admitted ignorance. (I'm really a mathophobe.) She demo-ed the application and I have to admit I was really impressed at what it offered to students. Here's the link:

GeoGebra is a free and multi-platform dynamic mathematics software for schools that joins geometry, algebra and calculus. It received several international awards including the European and German educational software awards.

I bought the latest gadget called the Kindle and was really surprised that with the first 10 mins of ownership I had the Boston Globe downloaded with a 2 week free trial subscription!!!!! It didn't even jump on my wireless system which was most impressive. I was very satisfied with the product and look forward to much kindling on cold winter nights!

Conference is over and a good time was had by all! It was really great to hear from people in our district that they had reignited their passion to teach with new technology tools. I too experienced the same excitement when I discovered Phonevite! A new communication tool that allows you to create a phone message and mass deliver it WHATEVER TIME you want! What a great way to remind parents they have a field trip that day and kids should bring lunches or coats! That's my cool tool of the day for sure!

My evening tonight consisted of presenting an Internet Safety for Parents class. It was nice to see 20-25 folks come out for such an important topic but wish more would pay attention to the need for safety. My goal is to tell the few that are listening and hopefully it will spread throughout our community that the need for safety is real.

Blogging Workshop

Today I am holding a District Blogging Workshop. My goal is to motivate teachers to use classroom blogging as a form of collaboration between students, parents and teachers. I feel it's a solution to extent the school day and such a simple tool to learn to use.

I just learned there will be a scheduled outage for upgrades on blogger starting at 4pm....so I am hoping they get here on time and are ready to create!!!

The NECC experience was overwhelming indeed and I had little time to do anything that wasn't already listed on my itinerary, much less Blog about it. I look forward to getting back into my virtual learning space when school starts and using new tools in the classroom.

Just for the record I started a facebook page to experience the social network buzz and I am now addicted. The actual possiblity of reconnecting with my old friends was a little intimidating at first, but after 3 days I have reconnected with 14 old friends!! What fun ;) It is really fun to author, connect and collaborate with people in an easy manner. I am now plugged in 24 hrs a day due to the addiction. Wish there were more hours in a day!!!

Are You Clickable?

I was browsing a magazine over the weekend and came across an article that caught my interest and it was penned by none other then Will Richardson, author, blogger and educator. He states "The Need to be Clickable" seems to be what the buzz is all about with Screenagers these days. He also asks "are we preparing our students to be Googled?" Reflecting on these statements, I found myself thinking that in our district perhaps we aren't addressing this connective experience for our students. Modeling things like connectivity for kids is a great tool for learning and perhaps this is one of the 21st Century teaching tools we could be offering.

What are we doing for our kids to prepare them for their name to be entered into the white Google box? Perhaps we could create our own online presence that would allow them to appropriately interact with teachers in a safe online environment. Whether it's a blog, wiki, myspace or facebook connection, our kids are already there. What are we waiting for. Have you shared information anywhere online yet? Are you clickable?
Being clickable means being connected. "The more you share, the more you learn." Well said Will!

All Roads Lead to the Web

As I embark on my virtual journey through Web2.0 the information that is at our fingertips amazes me. Teachers can now be the facilitator to the sum of human knowledge with one tool. A computer. Connectivity and collaborative tools such as wikis, blogs and podcasts are a powerful medium to engage students in a way that was never before possible. Students are asking teachers ..."after we complete this writing assignment can I post it to the web?" That ownership and pride in their work is something I haven't seen in a long time. They want to share and publish their learning for the whole world to see! Getting feedback on something they created is now opening conversations and allowing them to collaborate outside the barrier walls. The impact of that is true student learning in my opinion.

I recently purchased an educational documentary "2 Million Minutes" it was very thought provoking and scary. It points out quite nicely that the American educational system needs to be accessed and reworked if we are to continue to be globally competitive. The world is flattening at a staggering rate and our potential to be leaders is slowly diminishing simply due to instantaneous global access of information. My question is do Americans take it seriously or are we so arrogant and naive that we think we will always dominate the world as leaders? The American students in this video aren't worried about their future like the Students from India and China are. That's the scary part! I welcome your comments.

Technology a tool or a standard?

I have been reading many blogs and wikis over the past month and one topic of discussion that keeps recurring is the need to access technology standards. I'm all for assessment to promote the educational process of teaching and learning and if you are teaching a technology class then yes, there should be standards to assess. What I struggle with is if we are suppose to integrate the use of technology into the curriculum seamlessly as a tool then why are we assessing the use of that tool and not assessing the content made by that tool? I appreciate the fact we have tools that allow us to create such incredible content now. In my opinion, technology is a tool that allows one to build and connect to content, and content is the important result that should be measured.

I think all roads eventually lead to...If the student can connect to content (find it, decode it, evaluate it, organize it), and create from that content (add and subtract, process and synthesize, manipulate, mix and remix, and build new knowledge), communicate (express compellingly their ideas), and collaborate (test their ideas on others, and build from perspective and specialization) — and do all of that to successfully learn something new and valuable — then that’s the standard we must acknowledge, not what tool they used to get there.

If you listen to the news or read any main stream magazines, etc. you are all living in amazing times full of constant change and innovation. We have lots of gadgets, high speed internet, laptops, GPS in our cars, etc... Some would argue that life is easier with all these advancements, others think it is making us lazy and less connected with other people or with reality. What do you think?

Do you notice that things are changing, or have you always been in such a technology rich environment that you don't know anything different?

Do you like technology?

Is it something you see as a positive in your life helping you or is it a burden?

Actem Day 2

The 2nd day consisted of continuous workshops on various topics. I was fortunate enough to get into almost all of the sessions I was interested in and consumed a huge amount of information. It actually made my head swim, and by the time 4pm came I welcomed driving into a downpour on my way back to Gorham just to get my mind somewhere else.

One thing that I learned for sure is that the infrastructure of education is changing. Schools have up till now, been considered the culmination of the knowledge center. That center is now shifting at light speed pace. The center of education now resides within the richness of a global community network in which students can not only consume information, but author, edit and publish it in real time. So much for the average newscaster's job! Kids can have access to devices that allow them to report live coverage of an event and publish to the internet pictures in real time with information using a cell phone! This challenges me to think through how to ask teachers to leverage this critical piece of learning and not diminish their role, but to re-frame it with more emphasis towards student created learning networks. This is no doubt a shift that would make some people uncomfortable for a while, but after all it is important work! Let's shift to become a Globally Connected Classroom.

ACTEM Conference 2007

I'm at the Actem 2007 Conference in Augusta and it has been incredible so far! The session I attended today was a pre-conference session called "Media and Technology in the HS Classroom": Supporting Literacy and Numeracy for all Students.

Alot of GREAT info was passed on today......Looking forward to tomorrow- Only downside was I wasn't registered for the Actem Banquet which included the award for teacher of the year...I Would have enjoyed seeing that..oh well.... ordered a pasta dinner from Sam's and blogged from the Holiday Inn....LOL

NWEA has begun and the testing is in it's 2nd week.

MLTI Laptops have arrived for our High School staff and everyone is anxious to get their hands on them! Training is just a couple weeks away.

The New TV Studio at Village Sponsored by GoCat TV is taking shape and hopefully will be in place by the end of October.

First Day Back and all is well!!!!!

Here we go 2007-2008 is just around the corner and the coming year looks very exciting from a technology stand point. MLTI deployment of Macbooks at GHS will eventually increase professional development and creativity for staff. Infusing technology in the curriculum looks very promising in some of our schools. New tools will allow students and staff the opportunity to create/publish/evaluate their work in exciting new ways.
